We proudly share the cover of December of 2012 "Poder Magazine", dedicated to our Vicepresident Nuria Marín Raventós, focused on his work as President of ALAS (Association for Leadership and Social Ascent), which seeks training and empowerment of women to ascend to senior management positions through the creation of opportunities for training.

Our Vice President, Nuria Marín Raventós, received last August 23, 2012, the Costa Rican Tribute to Women in the area of Social Work, awarded by the magazine "Vanidades". In Álvarez y Marín we are very proud of her work and the recognition she has received.

Calinda Group in conjunction with Reico Group is proud to provide Finca La Maravilla School with wireless Internet access. With this contribution we hope to help develop the community and its children.
In Calinda Group we continue with our purpose to give back and improve the area in which we conduct our activities.


As Calinda Group we are extremely pleased with the outcome of the work together, to build a dike that protects the community of La Maravilla in Guápiles. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility projects, we feel obliged to help our neighbors in this community in the development of the area. For this reason we decided to donate two lots for the construction of this dike, we also collaborate with resources for its construction and also grant permission for another part of the dike to pass through the "Banana Támesis" which is part of the Calinda Group. This work is now possible thanks to the work of the SENARA, CNE, the community of La Maravilla and our group. Calinda Group want to stress again our commitment to the environment we live at, leave a positive impact on and be part of change, are part of our main goals.

El suicidio es una de las tres principales causas de muerte entre personas de 15 a 34 años a nivel mundial. Un obstáculo para su prevención es el “efecto contagio” que puede producir un artículo de prensa referido al tema. La Organización Mundial de la Salud y el Centro para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) de Estados Unidos han confirmado el incremento en las tasas de suicidio luego de un reportaje en la prensa.
El “contagio” puede ocurrir cuando el artículo brinda una explicación detallada del método de suicidio (algo común en la prensa). Esto facilita que el método sea luego replicado. También puede ocurrir cuando la noticia menciona que el motivo del suicidio fue un problema pasional o económico (otro rasgo común en la prensa). Lo anterior genera la impresión de que esta práctica es una solución “normal” para los problemas de la vida cotidiana.
La teoría del aprendizaje social nos ayuda a comprender mejor el punto anterior. Según esta, los seres humanos aprenden a través de la observación. Cuanto mayor es la exposición a un comportamiento, mayor es la probabilidad de considerarlo como algo “común”. Asimismo, si una persona que lee una noticia sobre suicidio puede identificarse o encontrar rasgos en común con la persona que murió, mayor será la posibilidad de imitación. Las posibilidades aumentan aún más cuando se reporta sobre el suicidio de una personalidad pública o de una “celebridad”, personas que ya de por sí suelen ser imitadas.
Los medios de comunicación podrían argumentar que no son responsables de las decisiones de sus consumidores. Sin embargo, investigaciones de la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales señalan que los medios gozan de más confianza que otras instituciones. Mientras que en 2010 solo un 15% de latinoamericanos manifestó tener confianza en los políticos, un 55% señaló tener confianza en los diarios. Costa Rica no se aparta de la tendencia regional. Esto implica que nuestra prensa influye significativamente las percepciones de los/as ciudadanos/as.
La solución no es eliminar la cobertura del suicidio, sino más bien generar una alianza entre los medios de comunicación y el sistema de salud pública para el correcto abordaje del tema. A nivel internacional existen varias directrices. Las más recientes fueron publicadas por el CDC, el Instituto Nacional de Salud Mental de Estados Unidos y otras organizaciones de ese país en 2001.
Según estas, la prensa debe evitar: usar titulares sensacionalistas y colocar la noticia en primera plana; hablar de recientes suicidios como una “epidemia”; describir el suicidio como un acto “inexplicable” que ocurre sin advertencia; describir detalladamente el método; concluir que el acto fue causado por un evento único como un divorcio o la pérdida del empleo; e idealizar a la persona que murió.
En cambio, los medios pueden contribuir a la prevención del suicidio mediante afirmar que la mayoría de quienes mueren por suicidio lo advierten de antemano; enfatizar que tener deseos de quitarse la vida es un problema que puede ser tratado y superado, y proporcionar información sobre las opciones de tratamiento que existen en el país.

With the main objective to promote the importance of women's leadership and empowerment in Costa Rica, on Friday November 4th, was held, the "Forum for Strengthening Women's Leadership in Costa Rica", where our Vicepresident Nuria Marin Raventós also President of the Association ALAS, was invited to participate as speaker.
This initiative was promoted by INCAE, CADEXCO, Coca Cola, IICA, AMCHAM, Embassy of the United States and the ALAS Association.
"Our association gives injections of internal empowerment" and "We are a group of women who want to see our women flying higher". These were just some of the words used by Nuria Marin to introduce to the audience, on-site and via streaming, the work done by the association which she chairs. She was in charge of presenting, along with Monica Araya-President of CADEXCO- female leadership programs that seek to make a difference today.
Among the speakers were: Ana Maria Majano, Deputy Director of INCAE; Arturo Condo, Rector of INCAE; Anne Slaughter Andrew, United States Ambassador to Costa Rica; Susan Clancy, Director of the Center for Women's Leadership, INCAE; Paul Largacha, Vice President of Public Affairs, Coca-Cola; James Velez, Specialist in Agribusiness and Marketing of IICA; Johana Rodriguez, Rural Development Specialist of IICA; Mayi Antillon, Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce, among others.

For three days, from October 10 to 12, Costa Rica was the scenario for the XIV Inter-American Microenterprise Forum, Foromic 2011 - an annual event of microfinance and micro enterprise development, which involved throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Representating Costa Rica, as a special guest panelist, was our Vice President, Nuria Raventos Marin, who had an outstanding participation in referring to its many life experiences in the development of different business ventures next to her husband Antonio Alvarez Desanti, and their daughters, Adriana and Andrea.
Other invited panelists, exceptional all-women, in the words of Nuria Marin were Inoa Milagros Perez, author of The Key to Success, Dominican Republic, Beverly Morgan Competitiveness Company of Jamaica; Alice Freitas, Brazil's Rede Asta and Esther Saez , Cosmetofood, Chile, accompanied by Mayi Antillon, Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce, who showed good skills as a moderator of the activity.
The event was organized by the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) Inter-American Development Bank, in collaboration with the Ministries of Finance and Economy, Industry and Commerce of Costa Rica.
The opening of the forum, by the IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno, meets annually to thousands of delegates from financial institutions and microfinance institutions, associations of entrepreneurs, government agencies, universities, NGOs and international organizations working in this sector.
